About Alpacas

Alpacas were a cherished treasure of the ancient Incan civilization. They are a fiber-bearing, humpless member of the camelid family.

Today the alpaca is found indigenously only in South America, in countries like Chile, Bolivia and Peru. Raised exclusively for their soft and luxurious fleeces, alpacas are perfect for small acreages.

They have soft, padded feet, low body weights, efficient food processing capabilities, and use the same dung piles making them environmentally friendly animals.

The Huacays fleece has a waviness (also known as "crimp") that gives it a fluffy appearance. The suri has a straight, lustrous fleece that hangs down from the body in beautiful pencil locks.

Alpacas are sheared once a year and normally yield between five to ten pounds of fiber each. Fiber can be sold for $4.00 to $5.00 per ounce.

There are alpaca shows held across the United States through out the year where alpacas are judged according to their fiber content, their conformation, their showman ship attributes, etc.

At these shows you will find alpaca products to buy and sell, alpacas to buy and sell and new information and training sessions about them is always available.
